Year 5 Poetry Winners

Three of Mrs Burkett’s Year 5 students entered a poetry competition, were listed as finalists and now their poems are being included in a poetry book. You can read Emma, Sienna and Cassie’s poems here.

Poetry Girls

It all started as part of Year 5’s PYP unit of inquiry into How the World Works. It prompted them to explore drought and plague, bushfires and floods, and use their creativity to write about what they had learnt. Drawing on the 7 Steps of Writing program that Mrs Burkett always does with her students, Year 5 set about writing some fantastic poetry. We are so thrilled that three of them – Emma, Sienna and Cassie – had their poems selected to be part of a poetry anthology. Fantastic work Mrs Burkett and Year 5. And huge congratulations to Emma, Sienna and Cassie!

The Monster in our Lives
By Emma

It was spreading fast throughout the world,
Nothing could stop this plague,
Loved ones were dying, children were crying,
The symptoms were just vague.

Now everyone one was stuck in lockdown,
With nowhere to go or see,
We would stare at a blank wall every day,
Wanting to be free.

Now after this had started,
Everyone had a fear,
A fear that this deadly, helpless beast,
Would stab us with its spear.

We have laid cowardly in the shadows,
Not daring to take a risk,
But risks are what we need right now,
Or the virus will take us in a whisk.

What I wish is for this to be over,
To be gone and never come back,
But if it decides to hurt us again,
We will be ready for attack!

Siena

This is the fire
By Sienna

Red sky,
Black smoke,
This is how the fire spoke.

Dead animals,
Burnt trees,
This is how the fire sees.

Worried whispers,
Scared screams,
This is how the fire dreams.

Water covered,
Tear-filled eyes,
This is how the fire dies.

Fire
By Cassie

As the sky blackened
The panic beckoned
As the flames flickered
The pain snickered

The fire grew
And the sky wasn’t so blue
The wind galloped like a horse
The ash and smoke flew with force

The fire was hot
The flames and specks shot
My heart stopped beating
And the fire started speaking

It spoke with its mouth
While going down south
He would never truly be gone
He’s been waiting for people to mourn

He slowed to a stop
No more flames or specks shot
He’s been put in a sack
But he will be back
