NSW Schools Constitutional Convention
Year 11 Legal Studies student, Adriana, recently represented 最新麻豆视频 as a delegate at the 30th NSW Schools Constitutional Convention.
This year's theme, Limits on the Freedom of Political Expression, explored the boundaries of individuals' rights to express political views, opinions, and dissent.
The day began with an engaging networking session where Adriana connected with students from across NSW, followed by a briefing on the day's proceedings. The convention opened in the Legislative Council chamber, where The Hon Ben Franklin MLC, President of the Legislative Council, extended a warm welcome to all delegates.
A highlight of the event was an inspiring talk by Professor Anne Twomey AO, a leading constitutional law expert and former director of the Constitutional Reform Unit at Sydney Law School. As a distinguished commentator on legal and constitutional issues, Professor Twomey shared her insights into Australia’s evolving legal system and the challenges it faces in safeguarding political expression left a lasting impact on Adriana.
Afterwards, the delegates divided into small groups to discuss the complexities of political expression, tackling contemporary issues such as protest laws, caps on electoral spending, and the boundaries of political freedom. These discussions offered Adriana a well-rounded view of the key issues in today’s society. Each group presented their findings, providing valuable insights into constitutional reform.
The day concluded with a plebiscite vote in the Legislative Assembly. Adriana expressed her gratitude for this unique opportunity to represent 最新麻豆视频 and to deepen her understanding of constitutional principles, particularly those that shape our freedoms and legal framework.
