Handy hydraulics
Lucy Row, Year 4, has recently been awarded 1st prize (judged) and the Crowd Favourite Prize for the Intermediate Category of the Robogals Science Challenge 2017.
is a student run organisation of volunteers that aims to inspire and empower young women to consider studying engineering and related fields. It offers engineering and technology workshops and challenges run by female engineering students.
Lucy designed a hydraulic arm by researching biomechanics, hydraulics and mechanical advantage, and by building several protoypes first. With the support of a dedicated mentor, Lucy produced an amazing repeatable hydraulic arm that used coloured water so the movement from each finger could be tracked. Her Youtube video for the Robogals Challege can be viewed .
The awards ceremony was held in Melbourne late last week and Lucy was asked at the very last minute to give an impromptu presentation and was able to captivate the audience for 45 minutes!
Congratulations Lucy, we are very proud of you.
